Matrix Logic — The Tiptop & Buchla 242t Programmable Pulser
The collaboration between Buchla and Tiptop Audio brings us a modern interpretation of the classic 242 Programmable Pulser. It maintains the original’s innovative spirit while introducing some more modern workflow improvements.
Visually, perhaps the most notable feature on the 242t is its 4×12 LED matrix that serves as your rhythm programming interface. The top row ‘n’ determines sequence lengths for the three trigger tracks A, B, and C below it. Two encoder knobs handle navigation – one for vertical movement, the other for horizontal scrolling – while a single button activates or clears steps. This elegantly simple interface replaces the original’s physical pin matrix without sacrificing immediacy.
The 242t generates triggers in multiple ways. Individual tracks A, B, and C output their programmed patterns, while ALTER provides two outputs for alternating pulses – handy for ping-pong effects. The ALL output delivers a continuous pulse train regardless of matrix programming. A dedicated gray jack outputs a ramp wave that pairs particularly well with voltage-controlled amplifiers or low pass gates.
Timing control is comprehensive. The period section spans from audio rate (.002 seconds) to leisurely 10-second intervals per stage, with an attenuverter for external CV control. An external clock input allows synchronization with other gear, while the reset input lets you restart patterns on command. The module also provides dedicated start/stop trigger inputs for the internal clock.
A thoughtful detail: A rear jumper lets you choose between short pulses (using internal timing or incoming clock width) or fixed 1ms pulses for maximum compatibility with other Eurorack modules. Simple grid logic paired with deep flexibility – the 242t elegantly bridges Buchla’s concepts with contemporary patching.
