The イセーニン (ee-seh-nin) is an eight-voice analog synthesizer modeled after the legendary Roland Jupiter-8 and adapted to today’s standards.
Eight separate fully analog voices. All consist of two oscillators, a highpass and a lowpass filter, noise, a VCA, an LFO, and two full ADSR envelopes. The ISE_NIN has everything that made the Jupiter-8 so desirable then and now. Powerful sound, due to the two individually tunable VCOs, an LFO with random waveform, and an arpeggiator with a random mode, but also new features like MPE, MIDI & USB control, presets and even microtuning.
Due to the rack or desktop format, Ise_Nin fits into any studio. You get all parameters of the two VCOs with the usual waveforms sine, triangle, ramp and a pulse width modulatable square wave. The second oscillator also has noise. The VCO-Modulator is a combination of the LFO and Envelope 1 and can create exciting soundscapes by modulating the oscillator frequencies. The two oscillators can of course be synchronized to each other via hard- or soft-sync which results in asymmetric waveforms. The just-mentioned arpeggiator has been a very inspiring tool of the Jupiter-8, which many appreciated. The range is adjustable up to 4 octaves and the modes have besides the normal up (and), down also a random mode. Whether portamento or glissando – here you get both and the cross fader at the bottom left invites you to “hands-on” control of the amplitudes of the two VCOs – very interesting for the layering (more about that later). Furthermore, you get two filters: a simple highpass filter and a lowpass filter. The latter has either 2-, or 3-poles and has a very characterful sound. Optionally the filters can be played with velocity (keyboard pressure), which allows expressive play, which was not possible in the 80s. The last element of the signal flow is the VCA, which ends in the audio outputs on the back. Next to it are the two envelopes, of which two stages of the first can be played with the polyphonic after-touch.
A powerful tool of the ISE_NIN is the so-called layering. Hereby it is possible to assign a different preset to each of the two oscillators, to then mix back and forth between the two layers with the crossfader and to play them on both halves of the keyboard individually with their own velocity and after-touch! Per layer, there are then consequently only 4 voices available, but this still gives plenty of room to play.
A really characterful synthesizer, reanimated and adapted to today’s needs.
